About TechGeneral
About me
I'm Neil Blakey-Milner, a technology generalist based in Cape Town, South Africa. This is my technology weblog, where I talk my wide-ranging interests in technology — common themes are open source (or Free Software, if you prefer), scalability, security, and how to teach, hire, and care for good technology workers.
I also maintain a personal weblog, where I talk about things other than technology — mostly about my travels outside and inside Cape Town, about books, games, movies, and other entertainment, as well as my experiences of people, organisations, events, and so forth.
The contact page contains a list of accounts I maintain with web services such as Delicious, Flickr, and Delicious, if you want to explore.

This weblog is powered by Gibe, a weblog server application I develop. Gibe is written in Python, and uses TurboGears (version 1). Gibe is open source, of course.
I'm using the GibeThemeTechGeneral2008a Gibe theme, which I obviously wrote myself, but which you can use and build on as well, if you like. This theme uses YUI's reset, fonts, grids, and base CSS. This theme was originally designed using Omnigraffle, images were exported and editing in The Gimp, and HTML and CSS loving hand-crafted in Vim.
I'm using the GibePages and GibeShortUrls plugins. This is a GibePage. The GibeShortUrls plugin converts post URLs from ugly long paths to SEO and human-friendly short paths.
